ELIZABETH LLORENTE is a Senior Writer for The Bergen Record (NJ), where she has covered immigration and ethnic affairs for nine years. Her body of work ranges from investigations of abuse against immigrants at federal detention centers to narratives about how different ethnic groups co-exist in various New Jersey communities. Llorente has won numerous local, regional and national awards, including the George Polk Award and Journalist of the Year. Llorente’s investigation of the federal immigration detention system at the Elizabeth Detention Center in N.J. led to major national reforms, as well as firings and reassignments of workers and officials. Her acclaimed series, “Tale of Two Cultures,” which chronicled how both Korean and Guatemalan immigration had affected a small New Jersey working class town, was featured on ABC-TV’s “Nightline.” Prior to working at The Record, she worked at the Central Jersey Home News and at The New York Times, where she began her career as a news clerk. She holds degrees in journalism and liberal arts from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
