USC Annenberg’s Institute for Justice and Journalism sponsored a forum that explored the reasons gangs are such a powerful force in Los Angeles, and how best to prevent gang violence.
The 2003 forum included two panel discussions, “Myths & Realities of Gangs in L.A.” and “Strategies & Solutions.” It was held at the University of Southern California’s Davidson Conference Center.
The panelists included:
- Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton
- Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca
- Former California Senator Tom Hayden
- James Diego Vigil, UC Irvine professor and author of “A Rainbow of Gangs”
- Celeste Fremon, journalist, L.A. Weekly
- Luis Rodriguez, poet and author of “Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A.”
- Connie Rice, civil rights attorney and co-director of the Advancement Project Los Angeles
- Father Gregory Boyle, founder of Jobs for a Future and Homeboy Industries
The program was moderated by IJJ Senior Fellow Joe Domanick, an award-winning investigative journalist and author of “To Protect and to Serve: The LAPD’s Century of War in the City of Dreams.”
The forum’s goal was “to contribute to more complete, accurate news coverage of gang life and gang violence through informed dialogue that includes diverse voices and perspectives,” said IJJ Director Steve Montiel.
