Robert Polner covers immigration issues for Newsday's New York City Edition. Since joining the paper in 1993, he has covered general assignment, housing, welfare reform, education and City Hall, and spent two years as an assistant city editor. In his duties as immigration reporter since March 2004, he has written about the tightened enforcement of immigration laws, attempts to deport South Asians, individuals' stories and ethnic enclaves. Polner graduated from Columbia College with a BA in history. He is the coauthor of New York Notorious (Crown, 1992) and is editing a book on Rudy Giuliani's mayoralty (SoftSkull, 2005). He has worked for such papers as The Record of Bergen County, N.J., and The Daily News of New York City.
