Karen Michelle Brooks
Border Affairs Bureau Chief
Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Karen Brooks runs the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s border bureau, which she helped to establish in Laredo, Texas in 2001. Brooks studied journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia before starting her career at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times as a police reporter in January 1995. In her time at the Star-Telegram, Brooks has covered the state legislature in Austin, Texas, participated in Knight-Ridder team coverage of the presidential elections, and covered assignments in Mexico City and Honduras. Her professional awards include the Associated Press Managing Editors and Headliner Awards. She is fluent in Spanish, and her areas of professional interest include the international drug war and state politics.
