Border Justice Fellows, 2003-2004

Susan Carroll
Border Reporter
Arizona Republic

Susan Carroll covers immigration and border issues for the Arizona Republic. After three years working for the Tucson Citizen, she moved to the Arizona Republic in October, where she opened the paper’s Nogales bureau. The Arizona Press Club named Carroll Journalist of the Year in 2002 for her border coverage. Much of her work focused on the deaths of migrants in the desert of Arizona, their willingness to risk their lives to cross the border and their impact on the United States' economy. Carroll also won first place for beat reporting in Arizona in 2001 and 2002 from the Associated Press Managing Editors, five outstanding reporting awards from Gannett Co. and numerous other statewide honors. She graduated from the University of Arizona in 1999 with degrees in journalism and Spanish.
