Border Justice Fellows, 2006

Dudley Althaus
Mexico City Bureau Chief
Houston Chronicle

Dudley Althaus has lived in and/or covered Mexico for all but three of the past 21 years. He began his newspaper career on the border at the Brownsville (Texas) Herald, worked in Dallas one year, and was sent to Mexico City by the Dallas Times Herald in December 1987 as its correspondent. While in Dallas, Althaus wrote many business and economic stories related to the 1986 immigration reform for the Times Herald. He has been the Houston Chronicle's Mexico City bureau chief since July 1990. With the Chronicle, Althaus has produced a number of in-depth series and special sections looking at social issues in Mexico and Latin America, many of which affect immigration patterns. In addition, Althaus has covered stories in Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and the Balkans for the Chronicle.
