Elliot Spagat has been a staff writer for the Associated Press in San Diego since April 2003, covering the U.S.-Mexico border. Previously, he worked for nearly two years at The Wall Street Journal's Dallas bureau, mostly writing about technology. From 1996 to 2001, he covered economic and financial news for Dow Jones Newswires in New York and Mexico City. He began in journalism by gallivanting in Mexico and Central America, landing his first real job at the late Mexico City News in 1989. He is a graduate of Grinnell College in Iowa and a native of Chicago.
