Criminal Justice Fellows, 2004-2005

Alisa Camacho
Crime Reporter
Herald News

Alisa Camacho has covered crime for the Herald News since 1999. Recently, she completed a project comparing gang deterrence initiatives in a Chicago neighborhood to those in Paterson, NJ. To do so, she spent two weeks in some of Chicago's most gang-ridden neighborhoods, interviewing street-gang members and the community members who eventually fought back against them. She has won New Jersey Press Association awards for breaking news and feature writing. In 2003, she received awards for a portfolio of stories about Ecstasy's emergence from club drug to social lubricant of suburban living rooms, policy issues surrounding a firefighter's death in the line of duty, and gangs’ taking over of corner drug dealers. She has a master's degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a journalism degree from William Paterson University.
