Racial Justice Fellows, 2007

Barbara Belejack
Editor
The Texas Observer

BARBARA BELEJACK, editor of the Texas Observer, moved to Austin in 2001 from Mexico City, where she worked as a journalist for many years. She also taught a course called "The U.S., Latin America, and the Media," at New York University's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Before becoming a journalist, she worked for two years as a Legal Services lawyer. Her real claim to fame, she says, is that she is distantly related to Thomas Bell (real name Belejcak, as the name is spelled in Andy Warhol country), the author of “Out of This Furnace,” a classic novel about Eastern European immigration to the United States. Belejack is a graduate of Vassar College. She received a master’s in journalism from New York University and a law degree from the University of Connecticut.
