JEFF KELLY LOWENSTEIN is a staff reporter for The Chicago Reporter, a bimonthly magazine that does investigative work around race and poverty in the Chicago area. His work at The Reporter has included a four-part series examining Dr. Martin Luther King’s 1966 campaign in Chicago and where the city stands on the same issues King and others sought to address. Kelly Lowenstein previously worked for South Shore Community News on Chicago’s South Side, wrote a weekly column for the Brookline Tab in Brookline, Massachusetts, and was a regular commentator for a National Public Radio affiliate in Amherst, Massachusetts. While at South Shore Community News, he wrote a six-part investigation about sex offenders that received a 2005 Peter Lisagor Award for Exemplary Journalism. He graduated from Stanford University and received a master’s in education from Northwestern. He is a former middle school and high school teacher.
