REBECCA TROUNSON has been a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times since 1993. For the last five years, she has covered higher education for the paper, writing news and feature stories about such issues as admissions, affirmative action and the financial and other challenges facing the nation's colleges and universities. From 1996 to 2000, she was based in Jerusalem as a Middle East correspondent for the Times, covering Israel, the Palestinians, Jordan and Lebanon. She has also worked for the paper as a roving California reporter. Earlier in her career, Trounson was a general assignment reporter for the Houston Chronicle and the Associated Press and, from 1982 to 1984, was a freelance writer based in Beirut, Lebanon for the Boston Globe and CBS Radio. She has a bachelor's degree in English and American literature from Stanford University.
