MARC COOPER NAMED ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF USC ANNENBERG’S INSTITUTE FOR JUSTICE AND JOURNALISM

LOS ANGELES (August 2, 2006) – Award-winning journalist and author Marc Cooper has been named Associate Director of the Institute for Justice and Journalism (IJJ) at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication.

Cooper has simultaneously been named Visiting Professor in USC Annenberg’s School of Journalism, where, in addition to his teaching responsibilities, he will lead activities intended to integrate IJJ’s work within the school.

Cooper has worked as a journalist for more than three decades, publishing in outlets ranging from The Atlantic and Harper’s to the Los Angeles Times and London Observer. He is a contributing editor at The Nation and writes a political column for L.A. Weekly.

“Marc Cooper brings to IJJ a proven track record of consistently producing excellent journalism about issues of social justice, and he has shown admirable capacity in sharing those skills with others.” said Steve Montiel, director of USC Annenberg’s Institute for Justice and Journalism.

Cooper will work with Montiel and IJJ senior fellows to further develop programs and materials to strengthen news coverage of issues involving social justice. He will also lead the institute’s new web-based initiative aimed at providing an array of resources to journalists, journalism educators and students. Beyond easy access to IJJ programs and information, the new site will feature a home page blog with a daily compendium of the best in justice-related journalism, and other original content, including essays, studies and analyses of justice journalism, plus expanded video and audio capacities.

"When journalists are facing increasingly difficult challenges covering issues like social activism, civil rights and our criminal justice system, the work of the Institute for Justice and Journalism has never been more important," said Cooper. "I’m delighted to join this endeavor to support first-rate reporting while also teaching students to become good journalists."

The author of three books, including the Los Angeles Times best-seller “Pinochet and Me,” Cooper is also the recipient of numerous journalism prizes, including a Major Armstrong Award for reporting on Central America. He was also named the 2000 Journalist of the Year by the Greater Los Angeles Press Club. Cooper was a 2002 IJJ criminal justice fellow and in 2003 was named IJJ Senior Fellow for Border Justice.

"In the past year, Hurricane Katrina, the war on terrorism and the increasing gap between rich and poor have underscored the need for truthful, effective reporting on these issues confronting our society," said Geoffrey Cowan, dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication. "Marc Cooper has taught for USC Annenberg for several years and is widely respected by his students and his readers as a first-rate journalist and teacher. I am very pleased he will be joining our faculty as a full-time professor and be part of the leadership team of USC Annenberg's Institute for Justice and Journalism."

USC Annenberg’s Institute for Justice and Journalism was created with Ford Foundation funding in 2000. Past fellowship programs and conferences have focused on criminal justice, racial justice and immigration-border justice and resulted in award-winning work.
